Durham Cathedral; a medieval Google
Media Studies 101 always includes an explanation that Cathedrals were the big media of the medieival day. The equivalent of television, where the illiterate and uneducated could learn about the world and their place in it.
After spending the day at Durham Cathedral I would extend this metaphor further and say that the cathedral was the Google of its day. In as much as the ‘answer to every question’ for medieval man could be found within its walls. Whether from the scripture, the stories in the stained glass windows or from the religious scholars working there.
The question now of course is what would happen to Google after an equivalent Reformation and the individualisation of religion?
